Introduction to Learn to Swim

At the ESC, the teaching of swimming is spread around 2 main stages corresponding to the first two stages of the Long Term Athlete Development (LTAD):

  • Beginners and Pre-Improvers [STAGE 1: FUNdamental – basic movement literacy]
A beginner will learn how to become more confident in the water to improve their autonomy (cover 15 meters with no aid). A pre-improver will be introduced to the four strokes of competitive swimming. A strengthening of the horizontal position, an emphasis on the streamlining, and an improvement in both endurance and strength will lead to faster speeds over the four strokes (20 meters in each stroke).
  • Improvers 1 to 4 [STAGE 2: SwimSkills – building technique]

An improver will have the opportunity to experience competitive swimming through club competitions. Rules and regulations will be understood and starts, touch turns and arrivals will be mastered. An introduction into some training tools will prepare our improvers in joining one of our squads whose learning outcomes move from the teaching to the coaching of swimming.

In our first two groups of improvers (improvers 1 and 2), the improvement in the four stroke techniques will be focused on the strengthening of the body position (horizontal and streamlined) with sets based on 1) leg kicking (streamlining), 2) appropriate drills, and with a transfer into 3) full stroke (including sprints). An emphasis on the two starts, the touched turns, and arrival will give them confidence in their abilities to compete. No swimmer with a screwed kick or lacking in confidence in their competitive starts and arrivals should move up into Improvers 3.

In Improvers 3 and 4, the arm-leg coordination will be the main focus for the breaststroke and butterfly teaching, with an understanding of the importance of the gliding phase in these two simultaneous strokes. The arm efficiency will also be improved, especially in the alternative strokes. The work on the starts and turns will be reinforced to prepare our swimmers to join the squads. An initiation to the tumbled turns (improvers 4) will follow the work on the touched turns (improvers 3).

Attendance to training sessions will be expected to increase throughout the development of each swimmer, from one training session a week at the beginner level, to 2-3 sessions a week in the improvers groups.

Movement guidelines:

Most movements will be based on a combination of age, performance, and technique, and not age or performance alone. Coordinators are responsible for promotions and each promotion will be coordinated between swimmer, parents and teaching staff at a time most beneficial for the individual.
